Writing Dissertation for Sociology
Each dissertation must be different from one another. If you are unsure with the process of writing your paper, talk with your supervisor. If you still need a help, these tips will help you in completing your work.A dissertation has five parts depending on the requirements of your department. Your paper must have an introduction, literature review, methodology, results & discussion and conclusion.
- Introduction: Ensure that readers will find answers to these questions: what is the purpose of the research? How your topic was chosen? What are the main objectives and aims of your research? What is the scope of your paper? What are the limitations of your work?
- Literature review: In this part, you need to give an introductory paragraph explaining what you have discussed in each chapter and why it’s necessary to be included in your dissertation. Make sure that you demonstrate a thorough literature search and read widely. Show that you read up to date materials and make a summary of what you have read. You also need to highlight trends, make a comment on the values of what you have read and to organize your findings. It is also essential to identify anomalies or gaps in the literature and to demonstrate that you understood what you read and written.
- Methodology: This chapter is included in justifying your choice of methods that you employed during research project. You need to show that you completely understand that numerous options are available in conducting a research. With this, referring back to your notes is important. Even though methodology focuses more on data, it’s worth to acknowledge what are the techniques you used that are related to your paper such as sampling, case study selection, literature searching and data analysis.
- Results and discussion: Ensure to give an introduction paragraph explaining what have been discussed in chapter. Provide discussions about results with reference related to the findings of your literature review. The readers expect that you match your result to the literature review and with it; you need to give comments and conclusions drawn. In addition, you need to write thematically and assure that you add value to your results with comments. Do not forget to provide and highlight analysis of new themes. Do not also forget about the recommendations.
- Conclusion: Check if your dissertation answers these questions: Did your research project meet its aims? What are the main findings of your research? Are there recommendations? Do you have conclusions about research process? Where further research shall be focused?
